Sessional Positions - Faculty of Design - OCAD University - Toronto, ON

The Faculty of Design invites applications for the following anticipated course offerings in the Fall and Winter semesters of the 2016/17 academic year.

GDES 1B09 Communication Design 1 ( Fall Semester, September—December 2016 )


Communication Design 1 is an introductory sequence of experiences that begin to address the environment of the communication designer as a relationship between tools, techniques, process, decision, judgment and knowledge. Students engage design as a process of formal experimentation in two dimensions using typography, photography and drawing. The fall semester fosters connections between making, looking and thinking as design-specific skills. This course is core to graphic design and advertising students.


Qualifications: Active practice and/or scholarship in graphic design and an interest in design as process. The successful applicant will have a diploma or degree in art, design or relevant discipline and/or equivalent professional/practical experience. Postsecondary teaching experience is an asset.


GDES-1017 Photography for Communication ( Winter Semester, January—May 2017 )


The focus of this studio is digital photography as it is integrated into the practice of communication design. Students will be introduced to photographic basics: camera function, lens and filter selection, exposure, lighting, basic studio techniques and post-processing/image management in a digital environment. Students will learn to evaluate the effectiveness of images in relation to specific messages. Lectures, demonstrations and a series of assignments will build students skills in camera and image control. Students will require access to a digital or 35 mm camera.


Qualifications: Knowledge and experience of the visual aspects of product branding in a senior professional context. The successful applicant will have a diploma or degree in art, design or relevant discipline and/or equivalent professional/practical experience. Post-secondary teaching experience is an asset.


GDES-3039 Strategic Branding: Products (Winter Semester, January—May 2017)
Strategic Branding: Products explores the brand process through the development of product brands. Differentiation, attributes, associations, voice, and design position brands. In a world where the mass market is dissolving into a plethora of niche markets, a comprehensive understanding of the targeted consumer based on demographics, psychographics, generational and cultural needs is essential. The strategic positioning through the visual and verbal aspects of the brand work together to create a memorable impact. Students will develop and produce materials including product design, packaging, and marketing materials for a product brand and its launch.


Qualifications: Expertise and experience of the development of the strategy and visual aspects of product branding. The successful applicant will have a diploma or degree in art, design or relevant discipline and/or equivalent professional/practical experience. Post-secondary teaching experience is an asset.


GDES-3063 Conceptual Game Design (Fall Semester, September—December 2016)
Games are a major entertainment form of the 21st century. As a design discipline, digital game form combines game worlds, rule sets and play to actively engage a player in an ongoing acquisition of skill. Students will iteratively design, visualize, develop, document and test unique game concepts to a final proof of concept stage. Developing skills from paper prototyping, game modelling and level design through to storyboarding, asset creation, character design and animation, this course provides a solid foundation in game design methodology for use both within and beyond the game industry.


Qualifications: An active practice in digital game design development. The successful applicant will have a diploma or degree in art, design or relevant discipline and/or equivalent professional/practical experience. Post-secondary teaching experience is an asset.


GRPH-2003 Time, Motion, Media (Fall Semester, September—December 2016)


This studio investigates communication design specific to the capture and creation of motion. Students will be introduced to narrative elements and principles as they are found in interface, animation, video, film and television. Students will study the effective use of time, space, sound, transition, media integration and graphic story telling. The course will explore basic digital motion creation processes: video-capture, animation, workflow, digital asset management, and distribution.


Qualifications: Knowledge and experience of video creation and editing in a senior professional context. The successful applicant will have a diploma or degree in art, design or relevant discipline and/or equivalent professional/practical experience. Post-secondary teaching experience is an asset.


GRPH-3009 Experimental Typography (Winter Semester, January—May 2017)


This studio course is designed to encourage interpretation, and investigation into the experimental and expressive possibilities of typography. Students will explore the relationship between semantics and syntactics to create emotive and engaging communications. The course will also focus on divergent/convergent processes, type as image, and creative/critical thinking.


Qualifications: Understanding of and a practice in expressive and experimental typography is essential. Applicant must have senior level design experience. The successful applicant will have a diploma or degree in art, design or relevant discipline and/or equivalent professional/practical experience. Post-secondary teaching experience is an asset.


GRPH-3011 Graphic Design 4 (Winter Semester, January—May 2017)


In this continuation of Graphic Design 3, skills, theory, practice, history and concepts come together in a way that is meaningful to the shaping of intelligent and provocative communication in contemporary culture. At this level, projects have been developed that encourage students to be more collaborative, and more aware of the world around them as they explore corporate communication and brand identity for product and service driven companies. In the context of traditional and emerging technologies students will research, conceptualize and produce work from the exploration stages to a presentation level. This course is a preparation for the final year of self-directed work.


Qualifications: The successful applicant will be comfortable with projects that focus on the exploratory and conceptual aspects of graphic design over directed and instrumental projects that serve a particular client, and have a diploma or degree in art, design or relevant discipline and/or equivalent professional/practical experience. Post-secondary teaching experience is an asset.


GDES-1028 Game Design 1 (Digital Futures) (Fall Semester, September—December 2016)


From film, television, animation, web to mobile; digital game form increasingly consists a central part of the modern media experience. This studio seminar course provides a practical introduction to game design within the larger transmedia environment from a thematic and global perspective. This course provides practical and theoretical studies of games and gameplay to build foundational game design literacy for broad application. Class exercises will frame the fundamentals of games; rules, play and culture to support the design process. Through presentation of case studies the student will learn and apply a range of methods and approaches to design and build playful game experiences.


Qualifications: An active practice in digital game design development. The successful applicant will have a diploma or degree in art, design or relevant discipline and/or equivalent professional/practical experience. Post-secondary teaching experience is an asset


Terms of Employment: Sessional appointments are fixed-term annual contracts of up to five studio courses per academic year. Sessional salary rates in the Faculty of Design are $3,939 to $5,654 per course, plus 11% pay in lieu of vacation and benefits. These positions are subject to budgetary approval and satisfactory enrolment levels.
