Senior Development Officer


Established in 1964, Weizmann Canada expresses the commitment of the Canadian community to help the Weizmann Institute. The Weizmann Institute of Science, based in Israel, is an internationally recognized center of multidisciplinary scientific research and graduate study, addressing crucial problems in technology, medicine and health, energy, agriculture and the environment. Weizmann Canada is a national organization with offices in Montreal, Toronto, Vancouver and Calgary. As we continue to expand our footprint in Canada we are seeking an experienced and energetic Senior Development Officer to join the Toronto team. Position Description:


The Senior Development Officer (SDO) is part of the development team working under the Vice President and closely with the National Executive Director. The SDO will be located in Toronto and is responsible for fundraising for programs across the Weizmann Institute. The SDO will identify, cultivate and solicit individual and corporate major gift donors in the $25,000 – $500,000 range. The SDO will collaborate with the national development team contributing to strategy and ensuring proper stewardship takes place following a gift to maintain the donor’s involvement, interest and support. In partnership with the Vice President, the SDO will be involved in the training of volunteers regarding cultivation and solicitation activities. The SDO will be responsible for making solicitation calls, both independently and as part of a team.


Key Responsibilities:


Fundraising


  • To identify leads and prospective donors for Weizmann Canada

  • To develop and manage a portfolio of potential donors ($25,000 plus) in various stages of development

  • To support the National Executive Director in the strategy, cultivation and stewardship of principal gift donors ($1M Plus)

  • To support the Gift Planning program and to help implement this program nationally in collaboration with fundraising team members

  • To support the Toronto-based Development Officer to ensure effective prioritization, planning, and delivery of projects and programs

  • To oversee the planning, coordination, and delivery of stewardship activities for the Toronto region

  • To provide strategic oversight and input into Toronto events and tactical support where required, to ensure that each event achieves its goals

  • To assist in the planning of an annual trip to the Weizmann Institute with volunteers and donors

Volunteers and Boards


  • To assist the Vice President in leadership development programs in Toronto to ensure that volunteers and team members are trained and supported in order to participate in and execute major gift fundraising activities

  • Work with Board members, lay committees and volunteers to support their efforts on Weizmann’s behalf, and to achieve awareness and fundraising goals

Leadership & Team Management


  • Contribute to the development of the annual and long-term plan, including specific goals and objectives for fundraising results in Toronto, and contribute to the growth of fundraising objectives in other communities across Canada

  • Provide coaching and guidance to team members

Education: University degree preferred but will consider an equivalent combination of education and experience


Experience: Five years’ experience in a fundraising role with a proven track record of success. Demonstrated major gift development experience (gifts $25,000 plus) and experience managing senior level volunteers.


Computer literacy: Microsoft Office, Raiser’s Edge and/or other relational database, email and Internet

  • Bring strong prospect identification and qualification skills, and will have the ability to generate leads and actively manage a pipeline of prospective donors

  • Demonstrate a strong track-record in actively seeking and securing donor meetings

  • Have a solid knowledge and understanding of the Toronto philanthropic community

  • Demonstrated experience working independently and as part of a team on major gift donors

  • Work effectively with, and quickly gain the respect and support of donors, volunteers, and colleagues

  • Bring strong planning, prioritization, organization, and time management skills

  • Lead by example, providing clear expectations and feedback, and use motivation and encouragement to get the best results from both staff and volunteers

  • Work well independently as well as part of a team that is geographically dispersed

  • Possess strong listening, speaking, and writing skills, and be a proactive communicator

  • Energetic, self-starter with a “can-do” attitude

  • Have confidence, polish, and a high level of professionalism

  • Possess discretion, tact, and judgment
