Reporting to the Senior Manager, Racing Surfaces, the Maintenance Mechanic – Irrigation, as a valued member of the Racing Surface Team, is a unionized position responsible for the irrigation of the turf race and training courses at Woodbine Racetrack. This will include the daily operation, assessment, maintenance, repair and upgrade of the irrigation system to insure dependable, consistent irrigation coverage, contributing to safe, world class turf courses. As a team member, the Maintenance Mechanic will assist with the repair, maintenance and operational set up of the turf courses, providing safe, consistent surfaces for thoroughbred horses to race and train over.

In this role, your responsibilities may include but are not limited to:

• Inspect turf courses, monitor and record moisture levels

• Schedule and operate Rain Bird SiteControl irrigation system on turf race and training courses and nursery, maintaining turf grass at moisture levels satisfactory for turf grass racing and training

• Trouble shoot irrigation performance issues including but not limited to sprinkler, pump, satellite malfunction and water line breaks

• Advise Manager of irrigation performance issues, making recommendations for their correction and opportunities for improvement

• Complete repairs/upgrades to irrigation system as required in a planned, professional manner including excavation, repair, backfilling and turf re-establishment

• Direct and train coworkers in the operation/repair of the irrigation systems

• Complete and maintain all documents/records in a timely and accurate manner as required including work orders, log books, inspection logs, and other documents used in performance of your duties

• Pressurize, depressurize and winterize irrigation systems as required

• Maintain all irrigation equipment in good operating order

• Maintain an inventory of repaired/new replacement sprinklers, sprinkler parts, pipe and fittings

• Work with turf course maintenance crew to complete course maintenance, repairs and rail setups as required

• Ability to plan and work independently to compete work assignments

• Demonstrate professionalism, courtesy, consideration and respect to coworkers, internal and WEG guests at all times

• General leadership and people skills with a demonstrated ability to work as a team player in the Racing Surfaces Department

• Ability to respond in a timely and effective manner to unexpected and immediate needs of the Racing Surface department


Qualifications:
Be All In!


We are seeking talented individuals with:
• College diploma in a field related to Turf grass management or University of Guelph Turfgrass Short Course preferred

• Advanced training in irrigation system operation, controllers, pump stations, pipe fitting and irrigation system design an asset

• Minimum 3 years related experience in the operation of high pressure/volume turf irrigation systems

• General computer skills in a Windows and MS Office Suite environment

• Able to understand, read, write and converse effectively in English

• Advanced knowledge of automated irrigation and pumping systems specifically designed to operate at high pressure and volume, specifically Flowtronex Pump Station, Rain Bird SiteControl program and Mirage 125, Rain Bird DR95, 87 Rotor and Eagle 950 sprinklers

• Advanced knowledge of turf maintenance procedures for athletic surfaces

• General knowledge of WHMIS and Health and Safety Acts and procedures

• General knowledge of the horse racing industry and turf racing an asset

• General knowledge of track surfaces and related issues and machinery an asset


This is a full-time, hourly, unionized position located at Woodbine Racetrack. The hours of work, shifts will vary and will include days, evenings, nights, weekends, holidays and overtime. Constant exposure to racetrack/warehouse environment where conditions are affected by dust, noise and weather. The majority of tasks performed require a high degree of physical exertion such as: regularly lifting and carrying heavy items, pushing or moving large items, maintaining agility/stamina for

extended periods of time, the ability to lift up to 50 lbs repetitively. Must have own basic hand tools. Must have a valid Ontario driver’s license with a clean record. Must be able to acquire and maintain a valid Alcohol and Gaming Commission of Ontario, (AGCO) license.
