Research Associates – 5 Positions (Revised)

Complex Mental Illness – Forensic Division

Position Description

The Centre for Addiction and Mental Health (CAMH) is currently seeking five (5) casual Research Associates for its Forensic Psychiatry service for a Canadian Institutes of Health Research (CIHR) funded project entitled ‘Predictors and consequences of trajectories of mental illness among prisoners.’ This multi-centre collaboration involving researchers from CAMH, University of Ottawa and University of British Columbia will follow approximately 800 male and 250 female prisoners over one year of imprisonment to explore the ability of correctional systems to detect mental illness and examine rates of changes in mental illness during incarceration. Research Associates will be visiting various prisons in Ontario (Bath, Kingston, Kitchener, Campbellford, and Gravenhurst). Research Associates will be critical to this project as the front-line staff responsible for administering data collection tools.

Reporting to the Principal Investigator, the Research Associates will be responsible for conducting structured diagnostic mental health and suicide assessments of inmates, administering self-reported psychological distress questionnaires and administering a structured questionnaire regarding inmates’ circumstances during incarceration. The position will consist of unscheduled and variable hours of work depending on the data collection site and candidate’s availability. The exact number of interviews at each institution will depend on the location of inmates who participate in the study at each follow-up. You will support a healthy workplace that embraces diversity, encourages teamwork and complies with all applicable and regulatory requirements.

Qualifications

The successful candidates will possess an Honour’s Bachelor Degree in clinical science, psychology or a related field with a minimum of one (1) year of clinical assessment training and/or experience. This includes current graduate students enrolled in a clinical training program. Experience conducting diagnostic interviews or structured assessments is an asset. Experience working in a correctional or forensic setting is an asset. Strong interpersonal skills with good judgment and tact are required. Candidates are expected to be detail-oriented and well organized. Effective oral and written communication skills in English are required. Experience collecting survey/questionnaire data is an asset. Candidates require the ability to work effectively in a wide range of settings with individuals from diverse backgrounds. A valid driver’s license and access to a vehicle is required as data collection sites are often in remote areas not serviced by public transportation. Bilingualism (French/English) or proficiency in a second language would be an asset.

Within your application, please specify which prisons you are able to travel to out of those listed above (i.e., Bath, Kingston, Kitchener, Campbellford, and Gravenhurst) and the maximum number of hours per week you are able to commit to this project.

Please note: These five (5) casual positions are NOT part of any Bargaining Unit.
